The block is designed to simulate a chain drive consisting of two sprockets and a chain. The block simulates the chain slack or tension. The tension of the chain is simulated by a viscoelastic tension force, the slack of the chain is characterized by zero force. Thus, when one of the sprockets is rotated, the slack of the chain will first be reduced, and then the torque will be transmitted through the tensioned chain. At the beginning of motion, the slack of the chain is evenly distributed on the driving and driven parts of the chain, therefore, before the start of the torque transmission, the driving sprocket will be rotated only by half the length of the slacking part of the chain.
